Sam Stanley joined the Big Green in March of 2005 as the director of development. Stanley served as Marshall's Assistant Vice President for Alumni Relations and Executive Director of the Marshall University Alumni Association from 1998 to 2002 before his appointment with the Big Green.

During his career, Stanley has worked as a journalism instructor at Brevard Community College in Florida (1988-98), the Director of Communications for Cabell County Public Schools (1980-88), West Virginia Tech's Director of Public Information (1977-79), Marshall's Sports Information Director (1973-76), and he spent nearly seven years as an editor at several newspapers. He is the president-elect of the Huntington Kiwanis Club, President of the Kiwanis Day Care Center Board of Directors, a member of the Huntington Area Salvation Army Advisory Board of Directors, and a member of the Marshall University Alumni Association Board of Directors. Stanley earned a B.A. in Liberal Arts from Marshall University in 1965 and an M.A. in Journalism from Marshall in 1980.
