GREENVILLE, N.C. - A 24-hour period of steady rain fall Friday created muddy and sloppy running conditions for the 2006 Conference USA Cross Country Championships. However, that did not keep defending champion, UTEP from winning its second-straight C-USA men's title and allowing the UAB women to capture its first cross country crown at a windy Lake Kristi in Grimesland, N.C. Saturday. The Thundering Herd captured the sixth place spot on the men's side and the 11th on the women's side. The men totaled 136 points and the women scored 239 points. Leading the men for a second consecutive meet was Travis Epling. Epling placed 20th with a time of 26:38.56 in the 8k event. Jon Nelson finished a few spots back in 25th with a time of 26:51.25, just four second faster then Matt Nelson. Marian Brooks led the women's team with her 13th place finish with a time of 18:36.27 in the 5k race. Brooks led Marshall in every meet this season. Emily Bailey crossed the finish line next with a time of 21:27.59 for 72nd place. UTEP repeated as conference champions for the first time since capturing 11-consecutive Western Athletic Conference titles from 1973-83. The Miners scored a meet-record 21 points, bettering their 2005 total of 23, and entered this year's meet undefeated with four meet titles. The women's race was a lot closer as one point separated the top two finishers. UAB tallied 54 points, while the defending champions Rice scored 55 points for second. The 2005 race saw Rice winning and UAB finishing second. Marshall runs next on Nov. 11 at the NCAA regional meet. Bucknell is hosting the event. 2006 MEN'S TEAM RESULTS 1. UTEP (21) 2. Tulsa (40) 3.
