Men's and Women's Cross Country Teams to Compete in Conference Championship

10/24/2001

Yspsilanti, Mich. – Marshall University’s men’s and women’s cross country teams will compete in the 2001 Mid-American Conference Championships on Saturday in Ypsilanti, Mich.

“We hope to run our very best race of the year,” Head Coach Jeff Small said. “We have a good opportunity to finish in the upper division with the men and in the top eight with the women.”

Leading the Herd for the men will be senior Casey Batey (Milton, WV), sophomore Craig Swisher (Bidwell, OH) and senior Jacob Porter (Barboursville, WV). The senior transfer, Jennifer Merschoff (Ronkonoma, NY), will head the women going into the race. Sophomores Shelby Pride (Bethel, OH) and Sarah Corley (Fairmont, WV) are also expected to play a vital role in Marshall’s performance.

Eastern Michigan will be hosting this contest on the Eagle Crest Golf Course. There will be 12 men’s teams and 13 women’s teams competing for the conference title.

“We are not really worried about the weather, although it should be adverse,” Small said. “We have been practicing in 80 degree weather so we should be prepared for anything.”
