George Brumfield is in his third year as a volunteer assistant for the Marshall baseball program. He served as head baseball coach at Wayne High School (516-304-5) for 27 years and two years as an assistant coach. His teams won four Class AA state championships (1984, 1992, 1994, 1995). His teams also were Class AA state runners-up (1986, 1988, 2002) and Class AAA runners-up in 1979. His team also made the 1989 Class AA State Final Four.
He worked as a coach for 10 years with Team One Showcase and coached in the first Cape Cod High School All Star Game. Brumfield also served on the Baseball America/HSBCA High School Top 25 Poll for 10 years.
Brumfield sent 35 players on to play college baseball and five to play professional baseball with one (Jon Adkins, Chicago White Sox, San Diego Padres and New York Mets) making the major leagues. He has had 85 players who have been named to one of the all-state teams and was also a professional manager with the West Virginia Coal Sox (1993) of the Frontier League.
Brumfield was one of the inaugural inductees elected into the West Virginia Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2003. He is married to the former Joyce Ann Carey and has two sons Tracy (and wife Nikki) and Chris. He has two granddaughters, Taylor and Lindsey and two grandsons, Cole and Blake.
