Ohio Upends Marshall Baseball, 9-6

ATHENS, Ohio - Ohio's Matt Stiffler had three hits to lead the Bobcats to a 9-6 win over Marshall Wednesday night at Bob Wren Stadium in Athens. The loss ended a nine-game losing streak for Ohio. The Herd (14-13) led 4-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh after scoring a pair of runs in the fourth and fifth innings, but the Bobcats (10-15) added six runs in the seventh inning to take the lead for good. Ohio scored the six runs on four hits, including two triples, and one costly error by Herd third baseman Matt Helm (Downington, Pa.), which allowed two runs to score at the end of the Bobcat rally. Ohio added a run in the bottom of the eighth, and the Herd tacked on two runs in the top of the ninth after Brit Vincent (Bowling Green, Ky.) scored on a wild pitch by Ohio's Andrew Shisila and Thad Ledford (Yukon, Okla.) doubled in Aaron Jamieson (Lindsay, Ontario). The rally and game ended when Blake Sanders (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) grounded out to third. Herd pitcher Andrew Blain (Huntington, W.Va.) took the loss for the Herd after pitching one third of an inning in the seventh and giving up three hits and two earned runs. The loss drops Blain's record to 3-1 on the season. Ohio's Zeke Isaacs got the win for the Bobcats after pitching two shutout innings in the sixth and seventh innings. Herd starter Adam Kuhr (Mason, Ohio) pitched six innings for the Herd and gave up four earned runs on seven hits.
Designated hitter Brendan Murphy (Chattanooga, Tenn.) was the only Herd hitter with two hits, one of which included his seventh home run of the season. Marshall only had six hits on the night. The Herd returns to action on Friday and Saturday with a three-game series at Liberty. Marshall will play one game at 3 p.m. on Friday, and a doubleheader on Saturday that begins at 11 a.m. ### |
