Baines, Dorris Named to C-USA All-Freshman, All-Defensive Teams
March 11, 2008
IRVING, Texas - The Marshall University men's basketball team received more postseason accolades on Tuesday as guard Mark Dorris (Cincinnati, Ohio) was named to the Conference USA All-Defensive Team and forward Tirrell Baines (Laurens, S.C.) was selected to the C-USA All-Freshman Team, the league office announced today. Dorris, a senior, finished the 2007-08 regular season as the C-USA leader in steals per game (2.0 spg in league play). Dorris recorded a personal-best 53 steals this season and was MU's leading scorer at 13.9 points per game. "It's a great compliment to be named to the all-defensive team, especially in such a competitive league," Dorris said. Baines became the second Herd player in three years, joining Markel Humphrey in 2006, to earn all-freshman honors. Among league freshmen, Baines ranks first in field goal percentage (52.9 percent - ninth overall), second in rebounding (5.7 rpg - t-15th overall) and fourth in scoring (11.4 ppg - 20th overall). His three double-doubles are second most on the team. "There are a lot of great freshmen in this conference," Baines said, "and to be considered one of the best in this class is a great honor." Humphrey got Marshall's postseason honors kickstarted on Monday when he was named to the All-Conference USA Third Team. Derrick Rose of Memphis was named C-USA Freshman of the Year while fellow freshman Randy Culpepper was named the Sixth Man of the Year. Indiana transfer Robert Vaden of UAB was voted the league's Newcomer of the Year. No. 8 Marshall will face No. 9 Tulane on Wednesday in the first round of the C-USA Championship at FedExForum. Tip-off is at 7 p.m. ET. Conference USA All-Defensive Team
