Richard Wilson Signs With Marshall Basketball

5/2/2001

Marshall University's head basketball coach Greg White announced today that Richard Wilson, a point guard from Augusta, GA, has signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball at Marshall next season.

"Richard Wilson is a big point guard, who will knock down the open shot, defend, and make smart decisions with the ball," White said. "We are thrilled to have him."

Last season, Wilson (6-4, 205) led Cowley County Community College to a 23-8 and a 13-5 mark in the prestigous Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC). He averaged 12.8 points, 8.1, assists, 4.0 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game as a sophomore, earning him All-Conference honors. Wilson twice posted career-highs in assists with 15 last season. He connected on a team-high 79% (139-of-176) from the free throw line.

"Wilson is an absolute warrior, who is a great defender, and an unbelievable passer that makes big shots," Cowley County Community College assistant coach Brian Jackson said. "Richard's best basketball is definitely ahead of him at Marshall."

Wilson chose Marshall over Iowa State, Xavier, College of Charleston, Pittsburgh, Duquesne, Arkansas-Little Rock, Rhode Island and Southern Illinois.

"Richard has tremendous character, is an excellent leader, and a very hard worker,"said Wilson's former high school coach at Butler High School, John Kucela. "Richard has blossomed into an excellent outside shooter, and he's always been a terrific defender. The Marshall fans will love him because of his tenacity and competitive toughness. I believe Marshall has found a diamond in the rough in Richard Wilson."

Wilson joins Ronny Dawn and Temple transfer Ronald Blackshear as signees for the Thundering Herd for the 2001-02 season. Marshall will tip-off the 2001-2002 regular season on Nov. 15-16 at the NABC Classic in Lexington, KY. The Herd will play George Washington on the 15th and either Kentucky or Western Kentucky on the 16th.
