Men's Basketball Team Visits Boys and Girls Club of Huntington
Aug. 1, 2008
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Players, coaches and staff members of the Marshall University men's basketball team paid a visit to the Boys and Girls Club of Huntington on Wednesday as part of its community service efforts. Head coach Donnie Jones brought his players and staff to the Boys and Girls Club to the delight of the approximately 60-70 children the facility averages per day. Executive Director of the Boys and Girls Club of Huntington Dortha Williamson said the club's purpose is to "give service to any child who needs service." Williamson added that the club is a safe, drug-free place that offers a variety of activities, including physical fitness, field trips and athletics. "We're excited to have the basketball team here and we're always eager to work with the Marshall athletic department," she said. The Thundering Herd could be seen all over the facility, playing ping-pong, foosball, billiards and video games with the children, along with signing autographs. Sophomore Marcus Goode worked at the Boys and Girls Club of Huntington for a few months last year and the 6-foot-10 center was a big hit with those in attendance upon his return. "(The Boys and Girls Club) reminds me of my childhood days," Goode said. "It's very important to the kids and gets them healthy by continually keeping them active."
