DALLAS – Marshall University senior Jamus Martin (Martinsville, Va.) has been named to the 2004 Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List, given annually to college football’s top defensive player regardless of position, as announced today by the Football Writers Association of America.
Martin, a 6-foot-2, 224-pound defensive end, paced the Thundering Herd in quarterback hurries (14), tied for the team lead in sacks (6.5) and forced fumbles (3) and was second in tackles (80) and tackles for loss (15) in 2003.
Martin is one of three Mid-American Conference players on the list, joining linebackers Brian Atkinson of Northern Illinois and Miami’s Terna Nande. The University of Georgia, which will take on the Thundering Herd on Sept. 18 in Athens, Ga., placed the only repeat finalist on the watch list in defensive end David Pollack. The senior was a 2002 Nagurski Trophy finalist.
The Nagurski Award will be presented by the FWAA and the Charlotte Touchdown Club at a Dec. 6 banquet in Charlotte, N.C.
Oklahoma defensive back Derrick Strait won the award in 2003.
