PINEHURST, N.C. - Junior Trent Schambach (Glen Dale, W.Va.) fired a first round 69 to lead a field of 90 individuals at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate on Pinehurst #8. As a team, Marshall is in tenth place out of 18 teams with a 304, 11 strokes behind first-place SMU, who ended the day with a 293.

Schambach had six birdies, a first-round best, one bogey, and one double-bogey on the par-72, 7,035-yard Pinehurst #8. Schambach has a one stroke lead on the University of Michigan's Bill Rankin, who fired a first-round 70.

Other MU scorers were senior Shawn Warren (Windham, Maine), who is in a tie for 21st with a 75, Christian Brand (Charleston, W.Va.), who shot a first-round 79 (T-61), Jonathan Pepe (McKeesport, Pa.), who fired an 81 (T-77), and Chris Tipper (Parkersburg, W.Va.), who ended the day with an 85 (T-91). Andy Foster (Vinton, Va.) played as an individual and shot an 83 (T-87).

The second round of the tournament begins at 9 a.m. on Monday.
