Marshall Golf Travels To Columbus For Mid-American Championships

5/2/2001

Aaron Williams, this week's MAC Golfer of the Week, hopes to continue his strong play in the conference finale.

Marshall University's men's golf team will compete in the Mid-American Conference Championship Tournament at the Medallion Club (7,030-yard, Par 72) in Westerville, Ohio Thursday through Saturday.

"Our goal is to put it together as a team this weekend," said Marshall Head Coach Joe Feaganes. "We have a very young team that has shown signs of growth throughout the year, and my hope is everyone will play well this weekend and we finish strong. You never know what might happen."

All ten MAC schools that sponsor men's golf will take part in the four-round event attempting to win the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Those schools are: Kent State, Toledo, Miami, Eastern Michigan, Marshall, Ohio, Ball State, Northern Illinois, Bowling Green, and Akron.

Marshall enters the tournament on a high-note. Thundering Herd junior Aaron Williams, a native of New Boston, Ohio, earned MAC Golfer of the Week honors this week following his fourth place finish in last weekend's Bruce Fossum/TeamGearOnline.com Invitational at Michigan State University. Williams finished that tournament one over par at 214 and lowered his season stroke average down to 74.12, which ranks him among the top seven golfers in the conference heading into the championship.

Marshall's other competitors are: junior Brian Perry, freshman Tim Lynch, junior Steve Sisson, and freshman Ryan Stewart.

The tournament's first round is slated to begin with a fixed tee start at noon Thursday, with the second and third rounds scheduled to be played Friday. The tournament's fourth and final round is scheduled to get underway with a fixed tee start at 8:00 a.m. Saturday.
