Marshall Golfer Sam O'Dell Named All-American Scholar

5/31/2000

Auburn, AL - On Monday evening Marshall University's Sam O'Dell was named All-American Scholar by the Golf Coaches Association of America. The award was announced at the GCAA Awards Banquet, held in conjunction with the NCAA Division I Golf Championships at Auburn University.

O'Dell finished the 1999-2000 campaign with a 74.35 stroke average, good for tops on the team. The Hurricane, WV, native also had six top-10 finishes this season, highlighted with a win at the Johnny Owens Invitational in Lexington, KY. In his career, O'Dell was named Second-Team All-MAC as both a junior and a senior, as well as tying Jonathan Clark and Harold Payne for the lowest career stroke average at 75.4.

"I am very proud of Sam for his accomplishments both on and off the golf course," said head golf coach Joe Feaganes. "Sam has been a tremendous asset to our golf program and I am very happy for him and Marshall."

O'Dell is the first Marshall golfer to be named All-American Scholar since Gary Rusnak was given the award in both 1984 and 1985.
