Marshall Golfer Shawn Warren Captures Maine Amateur
July 14, 2006 FALMOUTH, Maine - Rising senior Shawn Warren (Windham, Maine) won the 87th Maine Amateur at the Portland Country Club by six strokes on Thursday (71-64-74, 209), becoming only the second player to win both the Maine Open and Maine Amateur. Warren captured the Maine Open in 2004. Warren joined Jim Veno as the only golfers to win the state open and state amateur. "I've played in this tournament off and on for the last five years, and growing up as an amateur golfer, one of my goals was to win the state amateur," said Warren. "I'm glad I finally could come away with the win this year. Warren closed with a 74 for a 54-hole score of 1-under 209. He shot a tournament-low 64 in the second round after opening with a 71. He won by six shots over three golfers - Gary Manoogian, Toby Spector and Jesse Speirs. "This win is pretty important to me," continued Warren. "It was very high on my list of things to do as an amateur golfer." The Windham, Maine, native has led the Thundering Herd in scoring average in each of his first three seasons at Marshall, and has a career scoring average of 74.17 in 95 rounds of competition. In 2006, he set the single-season scoring average record with a 73.27 in 33 rounds of play. "Shawn has had a good career already for Marshall, and I hope this will propel him to a great senior season," said Marshall head coach Joe Feaganes. "We came alive at the end of last year as a team, and I think we've gained some real experience as a team," said Warren. "I hope the experience is going to pay off and we hope to keep this momentum going heading into the fall season."
