Herd Golfer Shawn Warren Wins 2006 Maine Player of the Year
Aug. 17, 2006 HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Rising senior men's golfer Shawn Warren (Windham, Maine) has won the 2006 Player of the Year award for the Maine State Golf Association. Warren claimed the award with 801 cumulative points, 222 more than second-place Ricky Jones, who ended the year with 579 points. The award is based on points gained in both state and U.S. amateur events and USGA events. Earlier this summer, Warren won the 87th Maine Amateur at the Portland Country Club by six strokes on July 13, becoming only the second player to win both the Maine Open and Maine Amateur. Warren also qualified for the U.S. Amateur in late July with a second-place finish at sectional qualifying at Atkinson Country Club in Atkinson, N.H. Warren and former Marshall player and current volunteer assistant coach Pat Carter will compete at the U.S. Amateur on August 21-27 at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn. Carter qualified for this year's U.S. Amateur, his 11th overall, with a sectional qualifying win at Berry Hills Country Club in Charleston, W.Va.
