HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Junior Dana Heimbecker recorded his second goal of the season in the final seconds of regulation to defeat visiting UAB, 1-0 Saturday evening at Sam Hood Field.

"It was good to get the win, we needed it too, because when you lose a couple of close games like have you've got to be able to come up on this side," Marshall Head Coach Bob Gray said. "I was glad to see it not go into overtime."

With 34 seconds remaining in the match, senior Avneet Shergill's passed led Heimbecker to a one-on-one with the goalie. Heimbecker dribbled around the Blazer's goalkeeper, Wes Johnson and scored into the open net. It was the fifth goal all-time for the Niagara Falls, Ontario native.

Shergill recorded his second career assist on the game-winning goal.

The Blazers took advantage of the final 20 seconds and received a corner kick in the last ten seconds. After an attempt by a Blazer forward sailed left the game was over.

With the win, Marshall improves to 8-5-1 on the season and 2-2-0 in Conference USA, while UAB drops to 5-8-1 and 0-5-0 in conference action.

Defensively, the Herd relied on its senior anchor, Jeff Lenix. Lenix's speed proved to be the difference for Marshall in the backfield. Lenix continually chased down offenders denying any attempt of a breakaway. Late in the second half, Lenix kept the shutout alive with a slide blocking a Blazer shot attempt.

Supporting Lenix in the backfield was defenders Nick Daniele and Brandon Lacko. Making his third-straight start was freshman Kendall Sutton for the injured Matt Dickerson.

Goalkeeper Craig Ratanamorn earned his third career shutout and second C-USA shutout after Saturday night's performance, dropping his goals against average to .90.

The victory over UAB is the first for Marshall between the two schools. The Blazers defeated the Herd in the first three meetings.

Coach Gray earned his 379th victory of his career and ranks sixth among active coaches in wins.

The Herd continues C-USA action when it travels to Lexington, Ky., to compete against University of Kentucky, Wednesday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. The game can be heard live at 88.1 FM as WMUL will be making the trip. It marks the first road broadcast in Marshall Soccer history. The game can also be heard on the internet at www.marshall.edu/wmul.
