UK Men's Soccer Outscores Marshall, 3-1
Oct. 24, 2007 LEXINGTON, Ky. - Marshall senior midfielder John Daniele scored his fourth goal of the season, but a late second half goal secured a 3-1 Kentucky victory in a Conference USA men's soccer match, Wednesday evening at the UK Soccer Complex. With the loss, the Herd drops to 8-6-1 this season and 2-3-0 in C-USA. The win improves the Wildcats record to 5-7-2 and 3-2-0 in conference action. The Wildcats put the game out of reach at the 75:17 mark when Kentucky's leading scorer, Barry Rice, recorded his second goal of the game, seventh of the season. Rice headed a corner kick from Brad Frederick to the right side of the goal to seal the UK victory. Kentucky took a 1-0 advantage early in the first half, when forward Aaron Swanson received a through ball and fired a shot that slipped under a diving Marshall goalkeeper, Craig Ratanamorn. The Wildcats increased their lead to 2-0 when they capitalized on a Marshall foul, 24 yards out. Rice placed a direct kick over the head of Ratanamorn that hit a post and rolled into the goal. Down 2-0, the Herd denied the Wildcat's attempt at a shutout when Marshall scored off a JD Hill corner kick. Hill played a ball in the 18-yard box and found Jeff Lenix, who placed a shot that rebounded to Daniele. The Columbus, Ohio native, Daniele, took advantage of the out of position Wildcat goalie and scored in the middle of the net. Lenix was awarded the assist on the play, his first of the season. The Herd continued to add pressure to the Wildcat's defense and came close on several occasions to tie the match. Sammy Boateng sent a shot in, but was denied by the Wildcat's goalkeeper, Dan Williams, minutes before halftime. Sterling Flunder stormed out in the second half and fired a shot that was again saved by Williams.
Marshall's Ratanamorn made two saves in the contest increasing his season totals to 44. Kentucky edged closer in the all-time series and now trials Marshall by only one game, 11-10-3. The Herd returns to conference action when it travels to Columbia, S.C. to compete against the South Carolina Gamecocks, Saturday, Oct. 27 at 5 p.m. |
