IRVING, Texas - Marshall junior guard Casey Baker was named to the All-Conference USA Defensive Team, the league announced today.

Baker, who left Lincoln Trail (Ill.) Community College last year as the career and single season leader in program history, has continued her success at Marshall. In her first season at the Division IA level, Baker led C-USA in steals, averaging 3.23 per game.

She recorded 97 steals in the regular season, the second best season in Marshall history and the fifth best in conference history. Tracy Krueger holds the single season record for the Thundering Herd as she recorded 122 assists in the 1992-93 season while Kim Williams of DePaul set the Conference USA mark with 131 steals in the 1996-97 season.

In 14 of Marshall's 30 games this season, Baker has recorded four steals or more. During a five-game stretch in December, Baker notched 29 steals, including a season-high of nine against Navy. In last week's games against Houston and Rice, Baker had five steals in each game to put her back atop the conference. Natasha Lacy of UTEP was second behind Baker, averaging 3.11 steals.

Baker's defense not only came in the form of steals, but also blocked shots. She had 13 blocks in the regular season, second on the team behind Tynikki Crook's team-leading 23. Nine of those blocks came during conference play.

Her expertise was also exhibited on the offense side of the ball as she averaged 11.8 points per game, second on the team behind Kizzy Hart. Baker's unselfish nature was shown in her willingness to find others with open shots as she led the Herd with 124 assists. That total put her seventh in the conference with an average of 4.13 per game.

Baker has been on a roll in that department as of late. In her last five contests, Baker has dished out 36 assists, an average of 7.2 per game. She tallied a career-high 11 assists against Memphis.

In the regular season finale against Houston, Baker posted a career best 28 points, 24 coming in the second half. She hit 8-of-10 free throws while hitting nine shots from the field.

Baker and the Herd will look to capitalize on the momentum gained from the win over Houston as they will travel to Orlando to face Tulane in the opening round of the C-USA Tournament.
