Women's Golf Finishes Play at Pinehurst Challenge

PINEHURST, N.C. - Marshall completed its final 18 holes of play at the 2006 Pinehurst Challenge on Tuesday, shooting a 340 to finish the women's golf tournament in 18th place. The 54-hole event was held at Pinehurst No. 8 and hosted by the College of Charleston. The Herd's total of 1,023 (339-344-340) beat out last place Charleston Southern (1,042) by 19 strokes. Maryland won the tournament with a 917, edging UNC Wilmington and Mississippi State (922), who finished in a tie for second. Defending champion Washington State placed fifth with a 935. Amber Churchill (Dublin, Ohio) was the Herd's high finisher with a 252, placing her in a tie for 82nd. The junior rebounded from her high-round of 89 in yesterday's second round to shoot an 80 today. Stacy Wagner (Harmony, Pa.), whose 79 in yesterday's second round was MU's best of the week, finished in a tie for 90th with a 256 after posting a 92 on Tuesday. Michelle Jarman of UNC Wilmington took individual medalist honors at Pinehurst for the second straight year thanks to a 1-under 71 in the final round. Jarman finished the week at 221 (5-over par), two strokes better than second place Angie Hill of College of Charleston. Washington State's Anastasia Kostina entered Tuesday as the 36-hole leader, but shot a 77 today to finish in a tie for third with Maryland's Katie Trotter. Marshall will next see action when its hosts the fourth annual Lady Herd/El Diablo Intercollegiate in Citrus Springs, Fla., on March 20-21.
