GREENVILLE, N.C. - The Marshall University women's golf team concluded its first Conference USA Championship at Ironwood Golf and Country Club on Tuesday in a tie for eighth place with a 54-hole total of 958 (312-325-321). Host East Carolina (887) won the championship to advance to the NCAA Regionals with the Pirates' Lene Krog winning the event by one stroke over SMU's Jennifer Ackerson.

Marshall junior Tammy Mahar (Ashland, Ky.) ended the tournament as the Herd's top finisher with a 237 (76-81-80), which placed her in a tie for 30th place. Fellow junior Allyson Hatcher (Wheeling, W.Va.), who placed 19th at the 2005 Mid-American Conference Championship, finished in 34th place with a 240 (75-81-84).

Mahar's score gave her Marshall's top finisher honors for the first time in 2005-06.

Junior Stacy Wagner (Harmony, Pa.) trimmed a stroke on Tuesday for a 7-over 79, bettering her prior two rounds of 80. She finished in 33rd place with a 239 (80-80-79).

Krog continued the trend of shaving two strokes off her score in each subsequent round when she fired a 2-under 70. Her score of 216 (74-72-70) was one stroke better than Ackerson's (217) and three better than third place Stacey Tate (219) of Memphis.

Nine teams competed in the 2006 C-USA Women's Golf Championship. SMU placed second, followed by a two-way tie for third place between Tulsa and UCF.
