WAYNESVILLE, N.C. - The Marshall University women's golf team opened up its fall season tying for 13th place in the first of two rounds in the Great Smokies Intercollegiate held at the Waynesville Country Club in Waynesville, N.C.

The Thundering Herd is tied with Akron, Radford and Gardner-Webb for 13th with a score of 305. The team is just four strokes out of ninth place and 21 strokes behind host Western Carolina, who lead the way after shooting a four-under 284.

Leading the way for Marshall was freshman Kaci Boyd, who shot a one-over 73 in her collegiate debut. That tied her for 19th overall.

Co-captains Kristina Garrett and Larie Lynch finished day one three strokes behind Boyd, tying for 44th overall after shooting a four-over 76.

Marshall's other freshman, Maria Battaglia, along with sophomore Rachel Halloran, each shot an 80 in their season-opening round.

Western Carolina enters Tuesday's second round of play with a seven stroke lead over second place Samford, who shot a 291 on Monday. Three of Western Carolina's five golfers finished Monday's round under par, led by Blaire Minter and Desiree Karlsson, who tied for fourth place overall, each shooting a two-under 70.

Three golfers are tied for the individual lead; Lorie Warren of Belmont, Chelsea Harris of Austin Peay and Carley Rhyne of Tennessee Tech each shot a 69 in the first round.

The teams will wrap up the tournament on Tuesday with 18 holes. Following the Great Smokies Intercollegiate, the Herd will not be in action again until October 6 when it hosts its annual Lady Herd Fall Classic.
