PINEHURST, N.C. - The Marshall women's golf team finished round one action in 18th place at the 2006 Pinehurst Challenge on Sunday at Pinehurst No. 8.

The Herd shot a 51-over par as a team in the opening round, seven strokes ahead of last place Charleston Southern. Round two will be played today, with the third and final round - with a shotgun start - on Tuesday.

Junior Amber Churchill (Dublin, Ohio), who had Marshall's highest tournament score at the season-opening Baja Invitational, put together the Herd's best first round on Sunday with an 11-over 83. She enters round two in a tie for 68th place.

Maryland fired a 14-over 302 to finish Sunday with a two-stroke lead over second-place Mississippi (304). Tournament host College of Charleston is in third place with UNC Greensboro and Iowa (309).

UNC Wilmington's Michelle Jarman leads the field after shooting an even-par 72. Jarman owns a one-stroke lead over Maryland's Katie Stepanek (73).

Marshall's Meredith Crislip (Parkersburg, W.Va.) and Stacy Wagner (Harmony, Pa.) are in a tie for 82nd place with opening-round 85s.
