PINEHURST, N.C. - The Marshall women's golf team remained in 18th place after Monday's second round of play at the 2006 Pinehurst Challenge, at Pinehurst No. 8, after shooting a 344.

The Herd followed up Sunday's opening round 339 with Monday's 344. Junior Stacy Wagner (Harmony, Pa.) posted MU's first round in the 70s of the spring when she fired a 7-over 79, six strokes better than her round one total.

Wagner leads Marshall after 36 holes with a score of 164 (t-61st).

Wagner was one of two Marshall players to improve their score from round one. Junior Tammy Mahar (Ashland, Ky.) trimmed four strokes with an 84.

In the team race, Maryland solidified its lead by shooting a 310 to total 612. Mississippi State, Iowa and UNC Wilmington are tied for second with a 620 each.

Anastasia Kostina overcame UNC Wilmington's Michelle Jarman, the round one leader, to enter tomorrow's final round as the leader. The Washington State golfer was even par in round two, the lowest score of the day (72).

Kostina owns a two-stroke lead (+3) over Maryland's Katie Trotter (+5).

Tuesday's final round will begin with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.
