GREENVILLE, N.C. - Junior Allyson Hatcher (Wheeling, W.Va.) shot an opening-round 75 on Sunday in Marshall University's inaugural Conference USA Women's Golf Championship, played at Ironwood Country Club (par-72, 6,221 yards) and hosted by East Carolina University.

Hatcher's 3-over par score placed her in an eight-way tie for 14th place, while as a team the Herd stands in eighth place in the nine-team race. Marshall posted a 312 through 18 holes, 20 strokes behind first place UTEP (292).

Marshall's Tammy Mahar (Ashland, Ky.) was 4-over par (76) after day one, good for a tie for 22nd. Stacy Wagner (Harmony, Pa.) and Jodie Switzer (Collingwood, Ontario) also registered scores for the Herd with an 80 and 81, respectively.

The top four scores from each school's five players count toward the overall team score.

UTEP's Gerina Mendoza fired a 3-under 69 in round one, two strokes ahead of second place Christina Wentworth (71) of UAB and Michaela Cavener (71) of Tulsa.

Tulsa (295) is just three strokes behind UTEP, while East Carolina (297) is in third place.

The championship continues with 18 holes on Monday, followed by the final round on Tuesday. Tulane, the two-time defending C-USA champions, did not get the opportunity to defend its title due to Hurricane Katrina.
