HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Marshall University women's soccer squad concluded its eight-match road trip victorious against Conference USA opponent, Southern Miss, Sunday afternoon at the Marshall Bell Track and Soccer Complex. The Thundering Herd shut out the Golden Eagles, 4-0. With the win, the Herd improved to 4-4-4 overall, 2-2-0 in conference action, while the Golden Eagles fall to 5-6-1 overall, 1-3-0 in league play. The Herd now leads the all-time series over the Golden Eagles, 3-2, which dates back to 2002. Today was the second shutout so far this season for the Herd, with the first being against Mount St. Mary's in August, at Emmitsburg, Md., 4-0. "The team came back from Friday's loss against UCF with an attitude and our style of play," Marshall's interim head coach Kevin Long said. "Finishing the weekend with a split saved the weekend and the team was pleased." Sunday afternoon's match also marked the first-time since 2003 the Herd has won two league matches. Marshall finished its 2003 season 2-1-0 in the Mid-American Conference. Last season, Marshall earned its first C-USA victory over Houston, 2-0, at Sam Hood Field. Junior transfer Rebecca Voss (Raleigh, N.C.) scored her first goal of the season in the 10th minute as she rebounded off an Angela DeSumma (Doylestown, Pa.) corner kick. Marshall quickly took a 2-0 lead after Missy Gordon (Carmel, Ind.) drilled her third goal of the season from 20-yards out at the 21:14 mark. The sophomore placed it close to the post in the upper part of the net from a Kristen Berquist (Highland Village, Texas) pass. The Herd's freshman transfer Erin Blakely (Westerville, Ohio) recorded her third goal of the season in the 29th minute, with assists from DeSumma and Ali Lizotte (Iron Station, N. C.). Marshall closed the first half with 14 shots, six on goal, while Southern Miss only had two shots. "We finally capitalized on our shots today," Coach Long continued. "The team held Southern Miss to no shots on goal until the 85th minute, which shows a dominating performance." Lizotte, a senior, opened second half play with her second goal of the season in the 53rd minute. The midfielder placed the ball in the upper far corner off a Gordon corner kick. DeSumma, the nation's 30th-ranked assists leader, also added two shots on goal in the winning effort. The freshman now has eight assists so far this season. Freshman Freya Holdaway (Llandrindod Wells) notched her first shots of the season with four, two placed on goal. Junior Molly Snead (Cincinnati, Ohio) added three shots on the day, which makes 26 shots so far this season. Forward Erika Duncan (Easthaven, Scotland) improved to 35 shots so far this season with four against Southern Miss. Co-captain keeper Liz Orton (Fort Collins, Colo.) had 71 minutes with no saves between the pipes. The Black and Gold's Holly Cox had four saves and Hannah Vanderboegh notched five saves. Freshman keeper Lauren Roberts (Rome, Ga.) recorded the Herd's only save and her second save in her Marshall career. The Herd outshot the Golden Eagles 24-to-9, with Marshall taking 13 on goal, while Southern Miss took just one shot on goal. "We had a good weekend and I am pleased with the 1-1 split," Coach Long added. "We are excited to begin our home stand Friday." Marshall will start a four-match home stand next weekend as the Herd play host to conference rivals, SMU and Tulsa, at Sam Hood Field. Friday night's match against SMU will begin Marshall's Breast Cancer Awareness weekend, while Sunday morning's match against Tulsa will conclude the festivities with the Kicks Against Breast Cancer Auction. The Herd will be supporting the cause by wearing and auctioning off pink Marshall jerseys, with all proceeds being donated to the Breast Center at St. Mary's Hospital in Huntington. GameTracker will be available for both matches by clicking the Marshall women's soccer schedule.
