HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall women's soccer team ended a six-game losing streak and earned its first Conference USA victory with a shutout over the University of Houston, 2-0, Sunday at Sam Hood Field. With the win, the Herd improved to 4-9-1 overall and 1-3-1 in C-USA action while the Cougars dropped to 4-9-1 overall and 0-5-0 in C-USA.
"This was a total team effort and we never quit," Marshall head coach Chris Kane said. "We executed the game plan and stayed focused for 90 minutes which led our victory."
Marshall's sophomore forward Molly Snead (Cincinnati, Ohio) dribbled from 30-yards out past the Cougars defense to drill the ball into the left side of the goal to put the Herd on the board early in the eighth minute. Snead's lone goal was her third of the season. She also tallied three shots with two being placed on goal.
The Herd's senior forward captain Kassie Hollman (Marietta, Ga.) put the game away in the 86th minute after a drive through the Cougars defense to add her third goal of the season. She also recorded three shots with two being placed on goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper captain, Liz Orton (Fort Collins, Colo.) tallied two saves which now puts her five away from her personal season best of 79, which was set last season.
Senior defender Sue Ahrens (Waterford, Pa.) also contributed three shots with one being placed on goal. Freshman forward Erika Duncan (Easthaven, Scotland) kicked two shots with one being placed on goal.
"We are excited about the getting three C-USA points but going to continue to march ahead," coach Kane added. "We need to continue playing well for our match-up against UTEP Friday."
Marshall controlled the momentum of the game by taking 15 shots with seven being placed on goal while Houston only took seven shots and two being placed on goal.
Marshall will travel to El Paso, Texas on Friday, Oct. 26 to face C-USA foe UTEP (9-6-2) (3-2-0) at the University Field with kick-off set for 7 p.m. MT. GameTracker will be available at: http://utepathletics.cstv.com/sports/w-soccer/sched/utep-w-soccer-sched.html.
