HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Thundering Herd sophomore goalkeeper Liz Orton (Fort Collins, Colo.) tallied 13 saves in a 3-1 loss against Memphis, in Friday evening's Conference USA contest at Sam Hood Field. With the loss, the Herd dropped to 4-11-1 overall and 1-5-1 in C-USA play while the Tigers improved to 13-3-1 overall and 6-1-1 in C-USA.

"Memphis is a very good team that is athletic and smart everywhere on the field," Marshall head coach Chris Kane said. "But if we play 90 minutes, we can compete against anybody."

Orton tied Ashleigh Woods' single-game saves record of 13, which was set twice by Woods in 2004. Orton claimed the number two rank on the single-season saves record with 104 saves, with one game remaining. The single-season saves record was set by Woods in 2004 with 119 saves.

"Orton has been solid for us," coach Kane stated, in regards to her personal play and saves records this season.

Memphis took an early lead at the 18th minute mark with a 20-yard shot by Kate Murphy to the back right corner of the net. The Tigers then closed out the first period with a goal from Kelsey Bakker off a rebounded corner kick from Caroline Barrett at the 22nd minute mark. In the 65th minute, Brittany Baldwin drilled a hard shot past Orton from the top left corner of the box to put the Tigers ahead, 3-0. Memphis' three goals were Murphy's, Bakker's and Baldwin's first goals of the season.

The Herd countered in the second half when sophomore forward Molly Snead (Cincinnati, Ohio) placed a Marisa Leconte (Greer, S.C) pass past the Tigers' backfield and goalkeeper from for her fifth goal of the season. Snead also tallied four shots with two being placed on goal. Leconte assisted with two shots being placed on goal.

"I was happy in the way we bounced back and played in the second half," coach Kane added. "We hope to finish the season with a win, Sunday."

The Tigers outshot the Herd 24-7, with 18 being placed on goal. With the Memphis win, the Tigers now lead the all-time series against the Herd, 3-0.

Marshall will conclude its season with a Sunday afternoon match-up against C-USA opponent, UAB, (8-7-1 overall, 4-3-1 C-USA) at Sam Hood Field with a 1 p.m. start. Prior to kick-off, the Herd's six seniors will be recognized for Senior Day.
