HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall's sophomore goalkeeper Liz Orton (Fort Collins, Colo.) as well as seniors Kassie Hollman (Marietta, Ga.), Sara Burdick (Leicester, N.Y.), and Mollie Lee (Leawood, Kan.) made women's soccer history, despite a 3-1 loss to UAB, in Sunday afternoon's Conference USA match-up at Sam Hood Field.

With the loss, the Thundering Herd closed the season 4-13-1 overall and 1-7-1 in C-USA while the Blazers finished 9-7-2 overall and 5-3-1 in C-USA.

"Today was an unfortunate loss," Marshall head coach Chris Kane said. "However, UAB is a good team and will make you pay if you don't take advantage of the opportunities."

UAB took an early lead in the fifth minute when Sally Palmer scored her eighth goal of the season off a Toni Gockel corner kick. Justine Hartigan tallied her fourth goal of the season in the 68th minute past Orton in the left side of the net. The Blazers finished the game in the 85th minute when Janet Self scored off a deflection from Orton.

Marshall's Marisa Leconte (Greer, S.C.) led the Herd with three shots, with one being placed on goal. The Herd's Orton tallied seven saves.

"I wish we could have ended the season with a victory," coach Kane added. "But we will have to focus on our downfalls from the 2007 season in 2008 with our new recruiting class and returning players."

The Blazers outshot the Herd 18-8, with 10 shots on goal. With the win, the Blazers now increase its all-time series lead to 3-0.

The Herd's Orton placed herself in the record books as she set career-records and single-season records as she ends with 111 saves, which places her second behind Ashleigh Woods of 119, set in 2004. Marshall's goalkeeper tied Kai Nordness with four shutouts, set from 2003 to 2005. Orton has taken the fourth spot on the goalkeeper minutes this season.

In addition to making single-season personal bests, Orton has passed four other Herd goalkeepers to take the number one spot on the career-records saves list with 190. With two years remaining, Orton has played in 2835 minutes, which is second behind Woods, set from 2001 to 2004. Lastly, she will hold the third spot with seven shutouts behind Woods and Kayla Johnson.

Marshall's Burdick will end her career as 10th on the matches started list with 38 and ties Kelly Posey and Lauren Scott as fifth on matches played with 66. Also, the Herd's Lee will end her career as ninth on the career-records matches started list with 40.

The Herd's senior Hollman will end her career with an impressive resume at Marshall. Hollman ends as fourth on the single-season goals and in points. She finishes in seventh in career shots.

Holman ranks on seven career-record categories. She tied Michelle Losekamp with 45 matches started, set in seasons 1998 through 2001 as number eight. Hollman ends with 87 career shots, which places her fifth. Lastly, Hollman will hold the third rank in career goals, game winning goals, multiple goal matches, assists and points.
