Marshall's Female Athletes Excel in the Classroom

1/4/2000

Huntington, W.Va. - For the first time in school history, every Marshall University women's athletics squad posted a team grade point average higher than 3.0 in the same semester.

Marshall's women's soccer team led the way with a cumulative GPA of 3.41 in the fall semester of 1999. This is the third consecutive semester that head coach Teresa Patterson's squad has led the women's programs in this category.

"I'm very proud of our team and all of the other women's teams here at Marshall," Patterson said. "Academics are our top priority and this is a sign that we are doing our job, not only on the playing field, but in the classroom."

Beatrice Crane, Marshall University's Associate Athletic Director and Senior Women's Administrator, echoed those same sentiments.

"I'm really proud of this accomplishment. Everyone has worked to ensure that our student-athletes receive the highest quality education possible," Crane said. "Most importantly, our student-athletes have demonstrated a commitment to their own success."

The Thundering Herd softball and tennis teams both posted 3.16 GPAs. Marshall's women's track and cross country team recorded a 3.15 GPA, while volleyball and women's basketball posted 3.07 and 3.06 GPAs, respectively.
