Women's Soccer Concludes Season with Pair of Conference Matches
Nov. 1, 2007
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall women's soccer team will close its season this weekend with two Conference USA games against Memphis and UAB. The Thundering Herd (4-11-1 overall, 1-5-1 C-USA) will play host to Memphis on Friday, Nov. 2. Then the Herd will conclude the season, Sunday, Nov. 4 with Senior Day honors at Sam Hood Field against UAB. Prior to Sunday's kick-off, the six 2007 seniors, Kassie Hollman (Marietta, Ga.), Sara Burdick (Leicester, N.Y.), Sue Ahrens (Waterford, Pa.), Mollie Lee (Leawood, Kan.), Kelly Jackson (Rochester, N.Y.), and Elise Provenzano (Webster, N.Y.) will be recognized. Coming into the final weekend, sophomore goalkeeper Liz Orton (Fort Collins, Colo.) continues to break her personal best single-season saves record of 79, set last season. Orton currently has tallied 91 saves for the season which puts her nine saves shy of holding the second rank on the single-season saves record list. The single-season saves all-time record is 119, set back in 2004 by Ashleigh Woods. The Herd and the Tigers have faced three-times in school history with Memphis taking the 8-0 decision in the last meeting at the Mike Rose Soccer Field in Memphis, Tenn., last season. Senior forward Hollman led the Herd with two shots with both being placed on goal. Both sophomore goalkeepers Rachel Huff (Dillsburg, Pa.) and Orton split time in goal with recording seven total saves, Huff with three and Orton with four.
Marshall and UAB have also met three-times in school history with the Blazers taking the close 3-2 victory last season at the West Campus Field in Birmingham, Ala. Sophomore forward Molly Snead (Cincinnati, Ohio) led the Herd with one goal, one assist, and two shots with both being placed on goal. Snead drilled the first goal of the game in the 21st minute from an Ali Lizotte (Iron Station, N.C.) pass. Despite the loss, Orton registered eight saves. The Herd will face Memphis (12-3-1 overall, 1-5-1 C-USA) Friday with kick-off set for 7 p.m. Then Marshall will play UAB (8-7-1 overall, 4-3 C-USA) Sunday at 1 p.m. The Blazers will be in action with C-USA opponent ECU on Friday, Nov. 2 at Bunting Field in Greenville, N.C. before facing the Herd Sunday at Sam Hood Field.
