Mitchell Tosses Shutout, Herd Splits Doubleheader with Southern Miss, 6-0
April 19, 2008
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Junior Autumn Mitchell pitched a four hitter en route to her first career shutout, as the Marshall Thundering Herd softball team avenged an earlier loss to split against Southern Miss, 6-0, in Saturday's Confernce USA doubleheader finale at the Southern Miss Softball Complex. Mitchell (9-4) finished with six strikeouts, while picking up her ninth victory of the season. Golden Eagle's (23-23, 7-10) Hannah Griffin (3-2) went a third of an inning and allowed four runs. Southern Miss' Meghan Harbuck relieved Griffin and finished the game surrendering six hits and two runs. "In game one, we failed to continue our attack after posting a run in the first inning," Marshall Head Coach Shonda Stanton. "I"m very pleased with the way we came back and responded in the second game. Both Caitlyn Jackson and Autumn Mitchell pitched well enough to get wins today." Offensively, the Herd (22-26, 9-9 C-USA) was led by seniors Rachel Folden and Samantha Rodriguez, both hit home runs in the contest. Rodriguez, Caitlyn Jackson and Kelly Nielson had two hits apiece in game, while Rodriguez led the way with two RBIs. The Herd waisted no time in the top of the first inning scoring four runs in the frame. After a leadoff walk from Folden, Rodriguez ripped her second first inning home run, she had a first inning blast in the doubleheader opener earlier. Marshall continued to rally after Jackson lined a single. She later advance to second from a Meghan Harbuckle illegal pitch. With one-out, freshman first baseman Melanie Stoehr roped a RBI double off the fence in right center, which scored Jackson.
The next batter, junior shortstop Nielson, laced a single through the right side, scoring Stoehr from second base, which capped the Herd's scoring in the first. Marshall extended its lead in the second inning to 5-0 when Folden cracked her 15th home run of the season, 56th of her career, to center field. The Herd added an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning, when Rodriguez cracked a double down the third baseline. Jackson followed with an RBI through the right side scoring Rodriguez from second, rounding out Marshall's scoring.
