HUNTINGTON, W.Va.- The Marshall University softball team swept a Mid-American Conference double-header with the University of Toledo Sunday at Dot Hicks Field. The Herd won the first contest, 3-1 and took the second game, 1-0. The pair of victories improves Marshall’s record to 13-19 with a 6-4 mark in the MAC.
"The girls did a great job of doing what it took to get the wins this weekend," head coach Shonda Stanton said. "We now need to keep working hard and improving."
In the first contest MU struck for two in the bottom of the third when De’Shaun Drake (Spring Valley, Calif.) doubled to score Nichole Corrigan (Corona, Calif.) and Sierra Davenport (Tucson, Ariz.) who reached on base hits.
The Rockets (7-20-1, 1-8) came back to score a run in the top of the fifth on a single scoring a runner from second, to make the score 2-1 after five.
The Herd wouldn’t remain silent for long. In the sixth, Davenport reached base on a bunt single and moved to second on a sacrifice by Drake. Davenport then stole third and scored on a errant throw by the Rocket’s third baseman. MU went on to win the game by the final of 3-1.
Davenport led the Herd at the plate, going 2-for-2 with two runs scored. Drake and Sarah Chamberlain (Moses Lake, Wash.) also had a productive game, with a single, a double and two RBI between them. Davenport received the win on the mound, giving up only three hits and improving her record to 4-3 on the season.
A defensive struggle, the second contest saw only nine hits between the two squads. The contest remained scoreless throught the first four and one half innings of play, as the Herd played superb defense.
Toledo committed four errors in the game, allowing Marshall to capitalize in the bottom of the fifth. Corrigan singled with one out and then stole second base to move into scoring position. Drake reached first on a UT error and Vanessa Clarkson (Moreno Valley, Calif.) then drilled a ball at the shortshop who over threw first base, allowing Corrigan to score.
The Herd pulled out the 1-0 victory behind a strong defense and the pitching of sophomore Sarah Chamberlain. She collected her fifth win on the season as she allowed only five hits and struck out four.
Marshall returns to action on Wednesday, April 10 at 2:00 p.m. as they faced Miami University in a Mid-American Conference double-header at Dot Hicks Field on the campus of Marshall University.
