HUNTINGTON, W.Va.- The Marshall University softball team defeated the Bobcats of Ohio University Tuesday in a sinlge Mid-American Conference contest at Dot Hicks Field, 3-0. Marshall improved their record to 15-22 overall and 8-7 in the MAC with the victory.
Ohio (20-16, 9-4 MAC) came into the contest in second place in the East Division of the MAC, but the Herd paid no mind as they came out on fire in the first inning. Nichole Corrigan (Corona, Calif.) started things off with a single to center field, before promptly stealing second base to move into scoring position. The next batter in the inning, Sierra Davenport (Tucson, Ariz.), moved Corrigan to third on a sacrifice bunt. De’Shaun Drake (Spring Valley, Calif.) then sinlged to left field to score Corrigan for the first run of the inning. Vanessa Clarkson (Moreno Valley, Calif.) kept the streak going with a single to center, forcing the Bobcats to make an early pitching change.
Sarah Chamberlain (Moses Lake, Wash.) greeted the new Bobcat pitcher with a sharp line drive to right field to load the bases. Huntington native Kelli Hall stepped to the plate and delivered a clutch single to centerfield to score Drake and Clarkson. A line drive double play got Ohio out of the inning after giving up three runs and five hits to the Herd to start off the game.
The first inning turned out to be the difference as both teams threatened throughout but could not produce another run. Marshall pounded out 10 hits in the contest, while the Bobcats had five.
Randi Nielson (Tucson, Ariz.) received the win on the mound as the freshman improved her record to 5-8 on the season. Corrigan led the offensive attack for MU, going 3-for-3 on the day and scoring a run. Clarkson and Chamberlain went 2-for-3 at the plate, while Hall was 1-for-3 with two RBI.
Marshall remains in third place in the MAC East Division after the victory. The Herd will travel to Mt. Pleasant, Mich. to take on the Chippewas of Central Michigan University on Saturday, April 20th.
