Box Score
DEKALB, Ill.- After a long, stormy day at Northern Illinois University’s Mary M. Bell Field, Allison Webb came through with a big hit, giving Marshall University a game three win over the Huskies, 1-0.
Predicted storms did not fizzle out over the skies of DeKalb on Saturday causing extensive delays. There was no score when lightning appeared in the top of the third inning with two outs and it was over an hour before play would resume.
Marshall threatened in the top of the fourth with an Amanda Williams (Powder Springs, Ga.) hit and a Huskie error on a hard hit ball by De’Shaun Drake (Spring Valley, Calif.). MU however could not get anyone in and the score remained tied as the game went into another rain delay.
Approximately one hour and 13 minutes later the contest resumed again with the Huskies (17-17, 7-5 MAC) batting in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Herd held NIU, but couldn’t get anything going for themselves in the fifth.
Scattering five hits and striking out three Randi Nielson (Tucson, Ariz.) went five scoreless innings for the Herd in and out of delays.
With Sarah Chamberlain (Moses Lake, Wash.) on the mound, the Herd held a Huskie runner who moved into scoring position in the sixth and Allison Webb (Wayne, W.Va.) put the Herd on top in the seventh. The Herd’s powerful catcher led off the inning with a deep fly ball that came to rest under the Huskie scoreboard in left field and giving MU the slim 1-0 lead. Before Marshall’s next hitter, Leigh Wintter (Acworth, Ga.), could finish her at bat the game was once again delayed due to rain.
After another 45 minutes the Herd came out swinging the bats hard, but went down 1-2-3 to carry a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh. The Huskies threatened, putting a runner on second base, but after four hours and 54 minutes the Herd came away with the 1-0 victory.
Chamberlain (7-5) earned the win giving up only one hit in two innings of work. Marshall could muster only three hits on the game, but solid defense and Webb’s homer was all MU would need.
The Herd (36-12, 17-4 MAC) continues to hold first place in the Mid-American Conference East division, maintaining a slim lead over Kent State University.
Marshall will host Radford University in a non-conference match-up at Dot Hicks Field. The doubleheader will begin at 4:00 p.m. and admission is free.
