Game 1
Game 2
Kalamazoo, Mich.--The Marshall University softball team (15-26, 8-11 MAC) was swept by the Broncos of Western Michigan University (18-17, 9-6 MAC) Sunday afternoon at WMU's Ebert Field. The Herd dropped the first contest 5-3, and lost a heartbreaking extra inning affair, 4-3, in the second game.
The Broncos scored two runs in the bottom of the third in the first game to break a 1-1 tie to give them the lead for good. However, the Herd made things interesting in the bottom half of the seventh. Trailing 5-3 with a runner at second base, WMU pitcher Wendy Cannon struck out the tying run to win the game for the Broncos.
The top three players in the MU lineup led the way for the Herd, gathering six of the team's eight hits. Nichole Corrigan, Sierra Davenport, and De'Shaun Drake each went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Vanessa Clarkson and Sarah Chamberlain drove in both of Marshall's runs.
In the second game, Marshall hurler Sarah Chamberlain was in total control through five innings. Staked to a 3-0 lead, Chamberlain gave up only one hit in those five innings of work. A two-out single in the sixth plated two for the Broncos, cutting the Herd lead to 3-2 heading into the seventh inning. MU's luck turned for the worse in the bottom of the last, when Erin Malloch deposited a Chamberlain pitch over the left field wall, tying the game at three. It was Malloch's first home run of the season.
The score remained tied at three until the bottom of the ninth, when Malloch blooped a single to right, knocking in the winning run.
Chamberlain went the distance for Marshall, pitching 8 and 2/3's of inning, yielding seven hits, four runs, three of those earned, while striking out four. Corrigan, Davenport, and Drake once again did a majority of the damage for MU. Corrigan went 1-for-5 with a run scored, while Davenport and Drake each went 2-for-5 with a run scored.
Marshall returns to action with a doubleheader with Wright State on April 23rd in Dayton. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
