HUNTINGTON, W.Va.- The Marshall University Thundering Herd softball team became the most successful squad in the history of the program Sunday, picking up its 40th win with a 10-2 victory over the Bobcats of Ohio University.
“I can’t say enough about how proud I am of these young ladies, especially the seniors, Karri Britt and De’Shaun Drake,” head coach Shonda Stanton. “Allison Webb has really come through for us in these last few games. We’ve had so many different people step up at different times this season, that’s what is so special about this group.”
Again the Herd(40-13, 19-4 MAC) jumped out to an early lead. Amanda Williams (Powder Springs, Ga.) drew a two out walk and De’Shaun Drake (Spring Valley, Calif.) lined a double to knock her in and put the Herd up 1-0. Marshall added another single run in the second inning when Leigh Wintter (Acworth, Ga.) blasted her third home run of the season.
The Herd scored three more runs in the third inning to take a commanding 5-0 lead. Jessica Williams (Powder Springs, Ga.) knocked a powerful single to center field to get MU going. Sierra Davenport (Tucson, Ariz.) reached on a fielder’s choice and Amanda Williams singled to knock in both her sister and Davenport after a Bobcat error. An Allison Webb (Wayne, W.Va.) single sent Amanda Williams home from second to round out the scoring for the third inning.
Ohio (8-28-1, 2-18-1) struck back with a run off a single and a Herd error in the fourth, making the score 5-1. The Herd however, kept the bats going in their half of the fourth inning. After singles by Jessica Williams and Courtney Kacenga (Sierra Vista, Ariz.) and a sacrifice bunt by Davenport, Amanda Williams knocked in two more Herd runs with her second hit of the game. After a Drake walk, Webb stepped to the plate and hit a three run bomb to collect her second home run in as many days.
After a potential big inning, a single run was all the Bobcats could muster in the top of the fifth as Marshall took the 10-2 five inning victory.
Randi Nielson (Tucson, Ariz.) picked up her 22nd win of the season against only four losses. She is now tied with Christy Waring as Marshall’s single season wins leader. Nielson gave up only two hits in 4.1 innings of work and struck out five Ohio batters. Webb went 3-for-3 to lead the Herd at the plate. Both of the Williams’ sisters had multiple hit days, with Amanda picking up three RBIs.
The MAC champion Herd will travel to Ohio State University on Wednesday to take on the Buckeyes. The non-conference double-header is scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m. in Columbus, Ohio.
