Sara Gulla Named MAC Pitcher of the Week

5/2/2001

Huntington, W.Va. - Marshall University senior Sara Gulla was named Mid-American Conference East Division Pitcher of the Week Tuesday.

"Sara was awesome this past," said head coach Shonda Stanton. "It really seems that she is getting stronger as this season goes. She has pitched great all year, but she has really stepped up for us over the last three weeks."

Gulla (Sr./Garden Grove, CA) was nearly untouchable all week. The left-handed hurler went 4-0 and did not give up a single run in 22 and 2/3 innings. Along the way, Gulla struck-out 42 and walked just three. Gulla also extended her consecutive innings scoreless streak to 30 and 2/3 innings. Gulla also topped the 700-barrier for whiffs in a season with her seventh strikeout in the 2-0 victory over Buffalo. Gulla also moved past Linda Padgett and Tami Johnson into second place for single-season strikeouts with 264 strikeouts. The four wins also allowed Gulla to reach the 20-win plateau this season. Gulla is only the second pitcher in Marshall history to reach the feat and first since 1997.

Marshall gets back to action this weekend with a three-game series at Ohio. A berth to the Mid-American Conference Tournament will be on the line. The Thundering Herd (14-7) is in third place, just one game ahead of Ohio (13-8). Kent State (15-6) and Bowling Green (17-4) face-off to decide the East Division Champion. Marshall can qualify for the tournament under two scenarios. First being, Marshall must take two of three from the Bobcats or the Falcons must sweep the Golden Flashes and the Herd must win just one from Ohio.

First-pitch for Friday's single game is scheduled for 3 p.m. The doubleheader on Saturday is set for 1 p.m.
