Softball Drops Two to Ohio

5/4/2002

  • Game 1
  • Game 2

Today's contests marked the end of seven different careers for Marshall's seniors. These young ladies have combined to play in 1172 official contests for the Herd.

HUNTINGTON, W.Va.- The Marshall University softball team fell to the Bobcats of Ohio University Saturday at Dot Hicks Field, 8-2 and 1-0. The Herd drops to 18-28 overall on the season and finishes with an 11-13 mark in the Mid-American Conference.

“This group has been through a lot and has fought hard,” head coach Shonda Stanton said. “Their perseverance has made me more proud than any MAC championship.”

Marshall started off with a bang as senior second baseman and leadoff hitter Nichole Corrigan (Corona, Calif.) crushed a home run over the fence in left-center field to start the game for the Herd. That hit put Marshall up 1-0 in the 1st, but not for long as the Bobcats scored two runs on three hits in the top of the second to take a 2-1 lead.

The contest remained close until the top of the fourth when Ohio scored four runs on three hits. The dagger for the Herd came in the form of a three-run home run off the bat of Jennifer Tisevich. The Bobcats didn’t look back, scoing two more in the fifth to make the score 8-1.

Marshall could only muster one run the rest of the way, when sophomore Sierra Davenport (Tucson, Ariz.) scored on a Bobcat error. Corrigan went 2-for-3 on the game to lead the Herd at the plate.

The second contest was a pitcher’s duel from the outset. Both Marshall’s Randi Nielson (Tucson, Ariz.) and Ohio’s Val Wood went the distance and gave up only three hits.

The lone run of the game came for Ohio in the top of the seventh inning. The leadoff batter singled and advanced to second on an error. She then took third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a timely single by the Bobcats.

Marshall’s freshman pitcher, Nielson, gave up only three hits and no earned runs in seven innings on the mound. Davenport, Vanessa Clarkson (Moreno Valley, Calif.) and Carrie Dean (Paradise, Calif.) each had a hit for the Herd.

Marshall’s season will most likely come to an end as they will miss the post season, despite a possible third place finish in the MAC East.
