IRVING, Texas - The Marshall Thundering Herd has earned the No. 2 seed and a first round bye in the upcoming 2006 Conference USA Softball Championship.

With its 4-0 win at Southern Miss Sunday, the host Tulsa Golden Hurricane (31-21, 15-8) won the C-USA Regular Season championship and the tournament's top seed.

The Herd (31-22, 15-9 C-USA) finished in a tie for second place in the league standings with Houston (38-21, 15-9) and UAB (31-20, 15-9). Marshall earned the No. 2 seed by virtue of owning a combined 4-2 record against the Cougars and Blazers.

Houston earned the No. 3 seed, followed by UAB as the fourth-seeded team. East Carolina (39-22, 13-11) clinched the No. 5 spot after its doubleheader sweep of UCF Saturday.

Southern Miss (27-36, 11-3) earned the tournament's sixth and final spot after the Memphis Tigers lost to Houston Sunday afternoon.

The Herd will play the winner of the Houston-Southern Miss opening round game Thursday at 5 p.m. (EDT).
