Softball Places Two on MAC First Team
5/8/2002
AKRON, Ohio- Marshall University softball players Nichole Corrigan and Sierra Davenport were named First Team All Mid-American Conference for the 2002 season at the MAC Softball Awards Banquet on Wednesday night.
Corrigan, second baseman and leadoff batter for the Herd, was named to the team as an at-large bid. The Corona, Calif., native led the Herd with 52 hits, including eight doubles, one triple and two home runs while batting .344 on the season. She is no stranger to the MAC honor as she was named to the first team last season and second team in 2000. Corrigan was also named First Team All-Mideast region for her efforts in 2001. The senior has racked up numerous awards over the last four years at Marshall including the Female Athlete of the Year Award for 2001-2002. She has etched her name into the school’s record books as the Herd’s all-time leader in doubles and runs scored and ranks in the top three of almost every other category (batting avg., hits, stolen bases, triples, and total bases).
Davenport brought versitility to her team this season, as she saw time at four different positions. She was named to the MAC First Team as a utility player. A native of Tucson, Ariz., Davenport played 29 games at first base, 15 games in the outfield and pitched 15 games for the Herd. In 63 innings on the mound, Davenport allowed only 73 hits and 19 earned runs for a team low 2.70 ERA. She hit an impressive .348 and had 49 hits on the season in only her sophomore campaign. Despite her youth, Davenport is also no stranger to this Mid-American Conference award, as she too was named First Team All MAC last season.
Corrigan and Davenport acted as Marshall’s one-two punch this season as they batted back-to-back in the top of the order for the Herd. The duo finished one and two in stolen bases in the conference, swiping more bases between them than most teams in the MAC. Corrigan eventually edged out Davenport for the stolen base title, finishing with 27-only one more than her teammate.
