Softball Lands A Pair On All-Region Team
5/24/2001
Huntington, W.Va. - Marshall University second basemen Nichole Corrigan and third basemen Vanessa Clarkson were named to the 2001 Louisville Slugger All-Mideast Region Softball squads. Corrigan earned first-team honors while Clarkson was named second-team.
"Both, Nichole and Vanessa, had tremendous seasons," said head coach Shonda Stanton. "Nichole provided so much spark from the top of the lineup. She pretty much led us in every offensive category. Vanessa was equally productive for us. She batted cleanup all year and really deserved this award, especially after missing out on all-conference."
Corrigan (Jr./Corona, CA) batted .352 this spring with 16 double, two triples, three doubles and 21 RBI. The co-captain led the Herd in batting average, runs scored (35), doubles, total bases (97), at-bats (193), slugging percentage (.503), hits (68), triples and on-base percentage (.399). Corrigan was also named All-MAC first-team at second base. Corrigan recorded 20 multiple-hit games and posted a career-high 14-game hitting streak.
Clarkson (Jr./Moreno Valley, CA) ended the year with a .318 batting average, 15 doubles, four home runs and 34 RBI. The third basemen posted 16 multi-hit games and 11 multiple RBI games. Clarkson also hit in 15 consecutive games, raising her batting average 51 points. Clarkson also broke the single-season and career RBI marks at Marshall. The junior was equally successful in the field. Clarkson did not make an error in the Herd's final 11 games.
