Women's Tennis Kicks-Off Weekend Home Opener Victorious

Match One against WVU BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. - The Marshall University's women's tennis team captured its first season victory against in-state rival West Virginia on Sunday morning at the Huntington Tennis Club. The Thundering Herd dominated the Mountaineers, 7-0. The Herd's No. 15 nationally-ranked duo of Kellie Schmitt (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Karolina Soor (Lindesberg, Sweden) continued their winning streak with an 8-3 decision over Natalia Prinz and Stacey Percival. "It was a good bounce back against our in-state rival," Marshall's head coach John Mercer said. "Hopefully we can build off this victory and keep improving." In doubles No. 2, Thaddea Lock (Bristol, England) and Isabell Raich (Klaus, Austria) defeated Monica Lyskawa and Gabriela Blaskovicova, 8-3. In the doubles three spot, Jessica Keener (Reston, Va.) and Yulia Kashelkina (Mascow, Russia) finished the doubles sweep with an 8-3 finish. In the singles number one position, the No. 19 nationally-ranked Schmitt was victorious over Percival, 6-0, 6-1. Playing in the No 2 spot, Soor rolled-over Lyskawa, 6-1, 6-1. Freshman Raich was victorious over Prinz, 6-1, 6-2, in the number three position. Marshall improved to a 9-3 all-time advantage over the Mountaineers.
West Virginia vs. Marshall Match Two against MSU The Herd kept on point after handling WVU with a 7-0 decision over Morehead State University on Sunday afternoon at the Huntington Tennis Club. Marshall improved to, 3-1, overall and 6-0 over MSU. The Thundering Herd's No. 15 nationally-ranked pair of Schmitt and Soor remained undefeated with a win over Heather Butt and Megan Rozboril, 8-1, in the doubles one position. "Morehead State has a lot of new and young players with time to improve," head coach Mercer stated. "But I think our experience made a big difference." Lock and Raich defeated Madeleinne Antero and Alix Lakow, 8-4, in No. 2 doubles. To finish another doubles sweep, Jeanne Schwartz (West Palm Beach, Fla.) and Kashelkina went 8-3 over Catherine Butts and Alexandra Rydberg. On the singles side, the Herd made quick work over the Eagles by winning each match in straight-sets. Schmitt went 6-1, 6-0 over Rydberg in the No. 1 spot. In the two position, Soor went 6-0, 6-1 over Antero. Playing the three was Raich with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Rozboril. In the No. 4, Schwartz went 6-2, 6-2 over Lauren Delaney. Playing the five was Kashelkina with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Butt. Keener played the sixth position with a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Butts. Marshall will travel to Charlottesville, Va. to face the University of Virginia Cavaliers and the University of Richmond Spiders. The Herd will face the Cavaliers on Saturday, Jan. 26 at 10:00 a.m. Then the Herd will challenge the Spiders on Sunday, Jan. 27 at 10:00 a.m. at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar's Head Sports Club.
