TULSA, Okla. - The top seeded and No. 7-ranked duo of Amanda Granson and Melissa Mang from Duke University defeated Marshall University's 28th-ranked junior doubles team of Kellie Schmitt (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Karolina Soor (Lindesberg, Sweden), 6-4, 6-3, Thursday afternoon, in the NCAA Doubles Round of 32 Competition, at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center, on the campus of University of Tulsa. "We are proud to have made it this far," Marshall's Head Coach John Mercer said. "I am proud of both Kellie and Karolina." The Thundering Herd pair finished the spring season 19-4. Schmitt and Soor were selected as one of three All-Conference Doubles Teams and honored as the Outstanding Doubles Team of the Conference USA Championship. "It was a tough loss," Schmitt added. "But we both have now been here and can make adjustments." Marshall's duo was the only C-USA doubles team representative competing in the NCAA Doubles Competition. "Now that we both know the expectations, we can bounce back next year," Soor said. Earlier today, Schmitt (55th) became the only Marshall Singles player to advance to the NCAA Second Round, but fell to the 12th-ranked Megan Moulton-Levy from William and Mary. Schmitt was also the lone singles player representing C-USA in the NCAA Singles Competition. This was the first time in Marshall's program history both a singles player and doubles team competed at the NCAA tournament. For complete updates on the 2008 NCAA Championships, visit www.ncaa.com.
