Women's Tennis One Victory Away from MAC Championship

4/18/2003

Toledo, Ohio-Needing a pair of victories this weekend to capture the Mid-American Conference regular season championship, the Marshall University women’s tennis team started the weekend strong by rolling past the University of Toledo 7-0. The victory sets up a showdown with Eastern Michigan University on Saturday, April 19, for the MAC title.

“We played well and we are now one victory away from one of our goals this season,” head coach John Mercer said. “Hopefully, we can continue our strong play against Eastern Michigan.”

The Thundering Herd opened up the match with the Rockets by sweeping the three doubles matches. Jessica Johnson and Alice Sukner played in the number one position and defeated Monica Ribero and Viviana Rivero 8-6. Ashley Kroh and Lille Nzudie teamed up at the number two position and cruised to an 8-3 victory over Daniella Moran and Eva Szuch. Finally, Danielle Hock and Meghan Skalsky completed the sweep by defeating Eunice Paravicini and Jen Meister 8-5.

Marshall stayed focused after the doubles sweep, winning all six singles matches in convincing fashion, including a pair of 6-0, 6-0 victories. Kroh blanked Szuch in the number four position and Nzudie shutout Moran in the number five position.

Other Thundering Herd victories include Johnson in the number one position, Sukner in the number two position, Hock at number three and Joelle Good in the number six slot.

Marshall will next take the court on Saturday, April 19, against Eastern Michigan University at 1:00 p.m. The match will determine the regular season championship and the number one seed in the MAC Tournament.
