Volleyball Falls To Morehead State, 3-0
Sept. 9, 2008 HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall University's Elizabeth Fleming (South Bend, Ind.) registered 35 assists and 12 digs, but Morehead State received a 16-kill effort from Ashley Doscher to pace the Eagles to a 3-0 (20-25, 22-25, 20-25) sweep over the Thundering Herd in Tuesday evening's non-conference volleyball match at the Cam Henderson Center. With the loss, Marshall falls to 4-3 on the season, while Morehead State improves to 7-1 overall. "It was a great match for twenty points in each set," head coach Mitch Jacobs stated. "Morehead State was able to go on three-to-six point runs late, and if you allow that, you're going to lose a lot of matches." Trailing 2-0 in the contest, Marshall built an early 10-6 lead. The Herd kept its cushion to as many as three points before Morehead State knotted the set at 18-18. The Herd used four kills each from Jalicia Ross (Bank Village, Trinidad) and Elizabeth Herman (Dunwoody, Ga.) during that span. From there, three Doscher kills, a kill by Emma Keough, and three Herd attacking errors sealed the sweep for the Eagles. In the opening stanza, the teams fought to six tie scores, and four lead changes with the last coming at 18-18. The Eagles managed to score seven of the next nine points to take the first set despite a four-kill effort in the frame from Emily Sullivan (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Megan Carlson (Andover, Minn.). Doscher notched six of her match-high 16 kills in the opening set. The second set saw 10 ties and three lead changes. Marshall was able to spread the ball around as Fleming, Ross, Herman and Layne Kehl (Mountain Top, Pa.) each totaled two kills, while Carlson added three. With the score locked at 21-21, the Eagles finished the set on a 4-1 run to post a 2-0 advantage in the match.
Ross finished with a team-high nine kills on 14 swings with just one error for a .575 hitting percentage. Carlson notched eight kills and seven digs while Sullivan, Kehl, and Herman added six. Kristin Marcum (Arlington, Texas) finished with nine digs while Jessica Dhoore (LaPorte, Ind.) contributed eight. Kristie Brangers dished out 12 helpers, Katelyn Barbour added 11 assists and Kristina Schoo picked up a match-high 16 digs for the Eagles in the winning effort. Morehead State also out-blocked the Herd 8.0-1.0 in the contest. Marshall returns to non-conference action, Friday, Sept. 12 with a contest against in-state rival West Virginia University. Match-time is slated for 7:00 p.m. in Morgantown. |
